Since 2007, there has been a www.koudachev.com/www.koudacheff.com web site.

At the suggestion of Cousin Kitty Stidworthy and after some consultation, it was agreed that the correct contemporary transliteration or Romanization of Кудашевы is "Kudashev". See the previous post. So I have copied all the data from the old web site to this new web site. The old web site will not be deleted. I will, however, add a final post notifying visitors of the move and providing a link to this web site.

Renaming and Readdressing the Koudachev Web Site

Cousin Kitty Stidworthy of Cambridge, England sends in the following recommendation:

Since the question of Romanization of the name Кудашевы has been raised, may I suggest that we follow the Library of Congress system, which is now pretty well standard in all Anglophone countries. Anybody unfamiliar with it can find it on the following sites:

Patent of Nobility for Prince Sergei Danilovitch Kudashev [1795 -1862]

This is an image of the patent of nobility confirming the nobility of Prince Sergei Danilovitch Kudashev (1795 -1862) and his wife, Mathilde Josephine-Catherine Kudashev (Choiseul-Gouffier) (1806 - 1867), as well as their ten children. The children were all individually named including:

Family Genealogy

In the summer of 1999, I did a search on the Internet and came across a reference to Jacques Ferrand and to some books he has written on the noble families of ancient Russia. I ordered a book that included references to the Kudashev family. This revision is a scanned version of the chapter on the Kudashev family. I have left the text in the original French.

The Princes Kudachev (Koudacheff)

The following text has kindly been provided by Marion Scheinberger-Koudacheff.

There are two branches of this family, one which remained Muslim and the other one, which converted to the Christian faith in the beginning of the 17th century, since it was obligatory to take up the orthodox faith in order to be admitted to the Russian nobility by Czar Boris Godunov. Our ancestor Kudach Murza took the precaution to only convert his first three sons.

According to old Russian archives our ancestor KUDACH MORZA (murza being a tatar title equivalent to prince) was given land by Czar Boris Godunov, in the region of Temnikov (Tambovsk gubemija) and its wealth came from the cultivation of bees (bee-hives), Bees are still part of the coat of arms of the region of Ternnikov and Tambovsk.

New Document Gallery

We have now moved this site from Dreamhost.com over to WordPress.com. This means that the site will be automatically updated. This will reduce the time needed to magage the site which should increase the time for writing new posts.

In the move, we dropped the separate photo gallery (which was broken anyway) and have started using the simple gallery built into recent versions of WordPress.

You can get to this gallery by clicking Documents Gallery up above in the header.

Currently there are many scans of historical documents and photos.

As you enter an album you will see thumbnail images. Click on any thumbnail to see a medium size image. Click again to see the full size image. You will have to click on the "Go back one page" button to return to the gallery.

We will be working on giving these images full titles and better descriptions.

Cousin Marion has sent in the following updates:

Concerning Berdyaev, there is a chapter: "cercle de famille" in a book written by Donald Lowrie: Rebellious Prophet written in 1960. There is a long description of the French connection through the marriage of Mathilde Choiseul-Gouffier to Serge Danilovitch Koudacheff. I got this book through my grandfather's wife, Lucy Marsh Leggett-Koudacheff when she died or before, I cannot remember.

Portrait of Moltedo by Ingres

The portrait of Joseph-Antoine Moltedo (born 1775), painted circa 1810 by Jean-Auguste-Dominique Ingres (French, 1780–1867) now hangs in the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York. From some time in the 1800's until 1906 it was hung in the house of Princess Vera Kudashev in St Petersburg.

Nikolai Alexandrovich Berdyaev

Nikolai Alexandrovich Berdyaev (1874-1948) was a Russian philosopher and religious mystic. His mother was Princess Alexandra Kudashev (1835- ??). On the Berdyaev web site there is no mention whatsoever of "Kudashev" or any of his other ancestors. There is, however, a very interesting analysis of the influence of his family on Berdyaev in the acts of the 22nd International Congress of Genealogy and Heraldry.

Time Magazine 1934-04-16: Romain Rolland Engaged to Marie Koudachev

Romain Rolland won the Nobel Prize for Literature in 1915. He was a writer and playwright, educator, critic and musician. Wikipedia describes him as a "A teacher, a pacifist, and a loner". Nonetheless he was married twice. The second time to Marie Kudashev (1895-1985) - the half-French, half-Russian widow of a Kudashev. Their engagement was announced in Time magazine. The image above shows the two of of them together - the photo taken perhaps through a reflection of an image of a solitary man.

NY Times 1918-11-02: To Wed Russian Princess

On the Second of November 1918 the New York Times announced the engamement of Norman Armour to Princess Myra Kudashev.

Welcome to koudachev.com. This web site is for members of the Koudachev family, their descendants, family and friends.

The web site was initiated after a conversation between Marion Scheinberger-Koudacheff (granddaughter of Prince Vladimir Vladimirovitch Kudashev and Theo Armour (grandson of Princess Maria Serguéievna Kudashev) at a dinner held at the Harvard Club in New York on 3 August 2007 attended also by Abraham Katz (Marion's husband) and Eloïse Armour (Theo's daughter).

Update 2010-08-21: This introduction was written for the first web site we built at Koudachev.com. We have since moved all work to kudashev.info.
